3rd Week
Topic 1: The Bird King
All the animals in the jungle had a king. The birds were jealous. They wanted a king too.
Let me be king. Look at my wonderful colours, said the beautiful parakeet.
No, no, said the myna. I can speak and talk to the other animals. I should be king.
And I have a fantastic beak, said Toucan. I want to be the bird king.
I know, said the macaw. Why don’t we have a competition? The bird who can fly the highest will be the bird king.
Everyone thought this was an excellent idea, especially the eagle. Make me king now, he said. I am the strongest, and I can fly the highest.
Ah, said a little voice. But you might not win.
Haha, laughed the eagle. You can’t beat me, little sparrow.
We will see, said the sparrow.
The race began, and all the birds flew high into the sky. They flew higher and higher, and the eagle flew the highest. ‘Ha! I told you!’ squawked the eagle. I am the king.
But the sparrow was hiding under the eagle’s wing. Suddenly, he flew higher than the eagle’s head. The sparrow was the highest bird of all. He won the competition, and the sparrow was the new bird king.
We learned from this story that size does not matter, confidence matters.
Topic 2: I can do it myself
I can help with the snack, said Josh. He pulled carrots and dip from the refrigerator.
Great, Mom said. Let me get a plate.
Josh ran ahead of her. I can do that too.
Josh ate his carrots and dip. He drank his milk.
Then he took his dishes to the sink all by himself.
Would you like to play in the backyard? Mom asked.
Let me get my shoes, Josh said.
Josh’s new shoes had laces. I can tie them myself, he said.
Josh pulled, lugged, and twisted the laces. They twisted into a knot.
Josh frowned.
I have an idea, said Mom. Why don’t I show you my own shoes? She showed Josh how to cross his laces, make a knot, and make a loop.
Now comes the tricky part.
Josh bit his lip. He found the hole under the loop. He said the lace inside the hole. He pulled the two loops.
Yes, I did it.
Would you like me to show you again for your other shoe? Mom asked.
No, thank you, Mom, Josh said. I can do it myself.
